Strategic crisis management in the European Union

A new interdisciplinary report by scientists from around Europe highlights that the EU’s strategic crisis management needs to be aligned with broader policy objectives.

The report stresses that crises are changing in nature, crossing borders and sectors, with cascading and overlapping effects on society, economy and environment, amplifying inequalities and hitting the most vulnerable the hardest.

The report was drafted by a working group of the academy network SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies), including Dirk Helbing from the ETH Zurich. As part of the EU’s Scientific Advice Mechanism, the conclusions feed into the policy recommendations of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors.
