The society enables contacts to professionals for questions from politics or the general public, if clarification requires the knowledge of physics.
A central preoccupation is the encouragement of the youth: the SPS rewards the excel-lence of young physicists by awarding several annual prizes, each with a prize sum of CHF 5000.-. The society is involved in the questions related to all levels of education in physics and intensifies the contacts with schools and the general public thanks to its own specialised section "Education and Promotion of Physics". Further, the SPS ideologically and financially supports the activities of "Schweizer Jugend forscht".
The SPS also maintains close contacts with industry partners and thus provides a forum at the interface between fundamental research and applied physics. The membership of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW) is beneficial for both parties. As a member of the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT), the SPS maintains intensive contacts with other natural sciences such as specialised geosciences and biology. The SPS is also a member of the European Physical Society (EPS), in which members of the SPS are regularly committed to functions in the committee, in order contribute to the international decision-making. The presidency of the EPS for 2015-2016 will be executed by the former president of the SPS Christophe Rossel.
