National comprehensive reviews on Environmental and Sustainability Research and Innovation needs, Funding and Science Policy and Practice Interactions

The publication compiles 14 national reports on research and innovation needs in the area of environment and sustainability, financing options, and the interaction between science, politics and practice. The needs of the partner countries involved in the CASRI project were collected and discussed, closely involving key national actors.

Sustainability research and innovation are essential for addressing the pressing environmental, economic, and social challenges that Europe faces today. The Collaborative Action for Sustainability Research and Innovation (CASRI) project, funded by HORIZON Europe aims to enhance the coordination and impact of sustainability research across the continent.

For this report, experts in environmental and sustainability research at the interfaces of science, funding and practice discussed research gaps in four focus themes (Resilient, net-zero and circular production systems, Biodiversity and climate, Sustainable urban development, Environmentally friendly energy transformation) as well as national and European challenges in interviews and workshops.

This comprehensive final report of the second CASRI work package, Deliverable 2.1, thus provides the data basis for further needs analysis and the development of a research agenda (SRIA) that can be implemented.

The project has thus taken an important step towards achieving the project goal of jointly promoting innovative sustainability research in close cooperation between environmental administrations in Europe.

From Switzerland, the Federal Office for the Environment and the SCNAT Sustainability Research Initiative are involved in the project and have co-authored the report.
