Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics ACP Award 2008

ACP Award 2008 goes to Dr. Sönke Szidat, University of Bern and Dr. M. Rami Alfarra, University of Manchester

ACP-Award-2008-Szidat

Dr. Sönke Szidat, University of Bern
for the development and application of a novel protocol to analyze carbonaceous aerosol samples using 14C/12C isotope ratios enabling the aerosol source apportionment into three major sources, namely fossil fuel, wood combustion (both anthropogenic) and biogenic (natural) emissions, for the unique combination of off-line 14C isotope analysis and on-line aerosol mass spectrometry allowing unambiguous mass spectral identification of anthropogenic activities leading to the formation of carbonaceous aerosols, and
for his application of advanced carbon source apportionment models for the interpretation of experimental 14C isotope ratios in aerosol samples.

Dr. M. Rami Alfarra, University of Manchester
for the application of aerosol mass spectrometry to identify the mass spectral patterns of primary organic particles from emission sources under controlled laboratory conditions and from secondary organic aerosols generated in a smog chamber in relation to results obtained from numerous field campaigns at selected locations in Switzerland, and for the unique combination of off-line 14C isotope analysis and on-line aerosol mass spectrometry allowing unambiguous mass spectral identification of anthropogenic activities leading to the formation of carbonaceous aerosols.

The ACP 2008 award was co-sponsored by Toyota AG, Switzerland.
