Mini Symposium: Global Climate of the Past Six Centuries

Climate reconstructions have served climate science since many decades, allowing a glimpse at past states of the climate system. Long reconstructions allow scientists to study climate variability during pre-industrial conditions, long-term trends, extreme climatic events, and they allow addressing the underlying climate mechanisms. A new reconstruction now provides 600 years of monthly, global 3-dimensional climate data. The reconstruction was generated by combining an unprecedented amount of past climate observations, including proxies such as tree ring width, documentary climate information, and instrumental measurements, with a state-of-the art climate model in a so-called data assimilation approach.

This new reconstruction, termed “Modern Era Reanalysis” or ModE-RA, is the outcome of the ERC Advanced Grant PALAEO-RA awarded to Stefan Brönnimann. The new reconstruction will be presented at the occasion of a mini-symposium “Global Climate of the Past Six Centuries” together with other data sets resulting from the project and insights gained from the analysis of the reconstructions. The presentations from PALAEO-RA are supplemented with three invited talks on long instrumental temperature data sets, climate modelling, and data assimilation methods.
