His nomination by the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT) was supported by the International Foundation for Science (IFS) and the national Dutch Academy. Guéladio Cissé is professor in sanitary engineering and environmental epidemiology at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Basel. In his previous leadership positions at the Centre Suisse de Recherche Scientifiques (CSRS; 2001-2009) in the Ivory Coast, he experienced at first hand the significance of freedom in science during the country’s civil war. Its safeguarding is among the work of the CFRS Committee as the custodian of the Principle of Universality of Science. This is one of the three focus areas of the International Council for Science, which, with its 122 National Members and 31 International Scientific Unions, caters for the interests of the global science community. The SCNAT has been engaged in the Council for more than 90 years, among other things by hosting the CFRS Secretariat since 2010.
