Field geologists increasingly use handheld devices and computers (smartphones, tablets, rugged laptops, GPS, digital compasses) for field data acquisition. Although a number of applications exist for Windows, Android and iOS mobile devices to assist in field data acquisition such as FieldMove, Lambert and GeoCompass, each of these applications has issues, which limits their functionality or integration in an efficient workflow.

Moreover, as each geologist develops a particular workflow for geological mapping and sampling using his or her own methodology and conventions, data sharing and collaboration becomes challenging.

We aim to address these issues by providing a forum for geologists interested in digital field data acquisition and data management. The informal meeting is intended to foster exchange between geologists from research, industry and administration. The workshop will consist of presentations, demonstrations of soft- and hardware, and a hands-on session in the field.
