The Swiss Society for Meteorology (SSM) invites you to a weather hike to Sämtisersee on Friday, October 3, 2025. As on previous hikes, we’ll be joined by two local experts - this time meteorologist Joachim Schug (formerly DTN Appenzell, now with Meteomatics, St. Gallen) and Stephan Vogt (MeteoSchweiz, expert for cold air pools). They will guide us through the unique climatology of the Alpstein region, including the iconic cold air pool of Sämtisersee and unique local weather phenomena found in Appenzell Innerrhoden.

We’ll meet at 11:00 in Brülisau and hike to the Plattenbödeli restaurant for lunch, then descend to the lake and visit the automatic weather station of www.kaltluftseen.ch. The return route leads via Ruhesitz, where we will have another stop, and then – on a less steep path – back to Brülisau. From there, buses to Appenzell depart every 30 minutes, with train connections to St. Gallen or Gossau/SG.

  • Gear: Hiking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, snacks, and water.
  • Hike time (without breaks): ~3 h
  • Distance: 9 km
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Elevation gain: ~470 m

Registration is closed.
