Improving cancer screening in the European Union
This new report indicates ways in which existing screening programmes for breast, colorectal and cervical cancer can be improved, and suggests extending them for lung and prostate cancer.
The earlier a cancer is diagnosed, the greater the chances of treating it successfully and straightforwardly. In order to save lives, many European countries already have cancer screening programmes. The evidence in this report by the European academies’ consortium SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) was presented to EU Commission’s Group of Chief Scientific Advisory in the frame of the Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) to feed into the development of the EU initiative "Europe's Beating Cancer Plan".
