Three years after Switzerland initiated its National Centres of Competence in Research, international expert groups have given top marks on a global basis to the scientific quality of the various projects. The Federal Office for Education and Science and the Swiss National Science Foundation are optimistic that the upcoming second call for tenders for this program can take place in spite of the present difficult situation in federal finances. The focus in the second call for tenders is exclusively on projects related to the humanities and social sciences - two areas which have long been under-represented in research programs.
Project outlines are to be submitted by January 15, 2004. Detailed applications by September 1, 2004. Research begins 2005.
