Farewell, Maurizio Falanga

With deep sorrow, we say goodbye to Maurizio Falanga, Director of the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern, who peacefully passed away far too soon on the night of 6 March 2025.

Maurizio Falanga grew up in Basel and completed his physics studies at the University of Basel. He then earned his PhD in theoretical astrophysics at the University of La Sapienza in Rome, focusing on black holes and specializing in X-ray astronomy.

After working for seven years as Executive Director of ISSI-Beijing, he was appointed in 2021 as Associate professor for space sciences at the University of Berne and co-director of ISSI Bern.

In his mid-fifties, he still had many plans and ideas – both professionally and personally. Our thoughts are with his loved ones.
